About the Filmmaker

Hi! My name is Bella Lo, and I’m from Hong Kong. I’m currently a 2nd year Bachelor of Arts student at HKU, majoring in History. Apart from focusing on my studies, I like to doodle and draw on my iPad, and I’m also a clarinet player in a local wind band right now. I hope you all enjoy the art I’ve drawn, as this video is my first attempt at compiling my drawings and creating an animation out of them!

Synopsis

This video consists of 4 snapshots from my aunt’s childhood during the Cultural Revolution.

What was it like for a child to grow up in a world that was rife with immense chaos and unpredictability? It is the 1960s in China, and you are roughly 3 when it happens. The adults raising you are talking about how there’s a revolution happening in the country. As a child, you don’t really understand what they mean, but this revolution would inform your formative years as you grow up later. It’s terrifying now that you think back on what happened decades later.
